SRE#10+ INFO + Powered PA Speakers: Who Needs An Amplifier!!

Amplifiers have become more an more expensive every day. In number of cases, when PA systems are deployed a huge part of money goes only into purchase of amplifiers. Powered PA speakers have been introduced considering the fact that PA systems might not require the amplification offered by an amplifier in some cases.

Powered PA speakers are different from other speakers because they do not require a separate amplifier be deployed with the PA system. Rather these speakers have on board amplification sub systems. These speakers can take signals directly from the audio input device, like a microphone or from the audio mixer. Thus the need of amplifiers can be circumvented when the PA system is deployed.

The powered PA speakers require an external power source as opposed to the passive speakers which do not require to be hooked on to a wall outlet. The main reason for this of course is that even though the loudspeaker might not need the power itself, there is the amplifier and a number of other on board subsystems which require power to be sent to them.

In order to ensure that bad Signal to Noise Ratio, Distortion and Noise do not ruin the sound quality, the powered PA speakers also have audio crossovers built in so that noise can be separated from signal. The audio crossovers in a powered PA speaker may either be active or passive. It depends on the price you are ready to pay for the speaker.

Another important benefit of powered PA speakers is that they have on board subsystems for slew reduction. The length of cable that connects the PA speakers to the audio source device can lead to degradation of sound quality due to slew. The powered PA speakers have special gadgetry which helps in slew reduction. This provides better sound quality.

Line noise is another common problem faced by PA systems. The powered PA speakers have an ability to remove line noise and they recover sound quality to a certain extent. Some powered PA speakers have have specially arranged line inputs which are designed in such a manner that they can only accept the signal balanced to the line input. This means that it will ignore other signals (noise). UHF signals are also being used in some speakers for this.

With powered PA systems, it becomes much easier to deploy the PA system because an entire component and lot of cable work need not be done.

Powered PA speakers are manufactured by a number of companies. The premier companies that manufacture powered speakers are Phonic and DB Technologies. You can find their products in retail outlets and you can also order them online The main benefit of purchasing powered PA speakers online is that lucrative discounts are available.
